Uses of the past simple

Common expressions of time in past

Verbs in Past

Regular verbs

  • Verbs in past can be formed adding “ed” with most verbs
    • Example: Start => started
    • Example: Kill => killed
    • Example> Jump => jumped
  • If the verb ends in “e” you only add “d”
    • Example: Agree => agreed
    • Example: Like => liked
    • Example> Escape => escaped
  • If a verb ends in a vowel and a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled before -ed.
    • Example: Stop → stopped
    • Example: Plan → planned
  • If a verb ends in consonant and -y, you take off the y and add -ied.
    • Example: Try → tried
    • Example: Carry → carried
  • But if the word ends in a vowel and -y, you add -ed.
    • Example: play → played
    • Example: enjoy → enjoyed

  1. I was in my mother’s house yesterday
  2. They were friends in the high school
  3. She was in classes the last week

Negative

  1. I wasn’t in my mother’s house yesterday
  2. They weren’t friends in the high school
  3. She wasn’t in classes the las week

Interrogative

  1. Was I in my mother’s house yesterday?
  2. Were they friends in the high school
  3. Was she in classes the last week
